EN ISO 16321: The New Safety Eyewear Standard You Need to Know

New Safety Eyewear Standards


Protective eyewear standards have changed. The long-established EN 166 standard has now been replaced by EN ISO 16321, introducing stricter testing and higher performance requirements for safety glasses and goggles used across construction, manufacturing and industrial workplaces.


According to the British Standards Institution (BSI), EN ISO 16321 represents the most significant update to eye protection standards in decades, improving protection against modern workplace hazards while recognising the diversity of today's workforce.


Although existing EN 166-certified products can continue to be sold and used until their certification expires (with the final transition ending in October 2029), all newly certified protective eyewear must now comply with EN ISO 16321.



What's Changed?


Improved Fit for Better Protection

Under EN 166, eyewear was tested using only two headform sizes. EN ISO 16321 now requires testing across six headforms, based on global anthropometric data, with manufacturers specifiying which head sizes each product is designed to fit. A better fit helps reduce gaps between the face and the goggle seal, providing improved protection against dust, debris, and liquid splashes.


Stronger Impact Testing

The new standard raises impact protection by introducing a 66g steel ball for the basic impact test, replacing the previous 43g test. An optional 500g high-mass impact test has also been added to simulate heavier workplace hazards, such as falling tools or debris.


Enhanced Dust and Chemical Protection

EN ISO 16321 introduces a 1.5mm penetration test to ensure vents and opening cannot allow hazardous particles through. It also updates product markings, include the "CH" designation for eyewear certified to protect against chemical hazards.


Clearer Vision, Safer Working

To improve visibility, clear lenses must now achieve at least 80% luminous transmittance. The standard also replaces older light-scatter testing with more accurate haze measurements, helping reduce visual distortion during prolonged use.



Why It Matters

The latest standard makes it clear that choosing compliant safety eyewear is about more than meeting regulations. Correct fit, appropriate impact protection and clear product markings all play an important role in reducing workplace risks and helping employers meet their health and safety responsibilities.
