PFAS-Free Workwear: Preparing for Changing PPE Regulations

The PPE industry is undergoing a significant shift as manufacturers move away from PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) - commonly known as "forever chemicals" due to their persistence in the environment. Read more to understand these changing PPE regulations.

Traditionally used to provide water, oil, and stain resistance in workwear, footwear, and gloves, PFAS are increasingly under scrutiny because of their potential impact on human health and the environment. According to the European Commission, PFAS can contaminate drinking water, food, and ecosystems, and are extremely difficult to remove once released.

While Category III PPE, designed for protection against life-threatening risks, may still require specialised PFAS-based coatings where no proven alternative exists, most mechanical protection PPE - including general-purpose gloves, weatherproof clothing, and safety footwear - is rapidly transitioning to fluorine-free alternatives.

This shift is being driven by evolving regulation. The EU has strengthened monitoring and control of PFAS, while the UK Government's PFAS Plan outlines a long-term strategy to reduce PFAS use across manufacturing and consumer products and encourage safer alternatives.

For employers, now is the time to review PPE specifications, identify PFAS-free options where appropriate, and work with suppliers that can demonstrate product transparency and regulatory compliance.
